The leading role is a lot easier when you have a trained, experienced Backstage staff to create catalog records for any item, from any source information available - MARC and DC records, other database records, lists, printed catalogs, notes on the backs of photographs, fragile manuscripts written in Japanese with quill pens.
Whatever information you have can be incorporated into the metadata your patrons require, based on database searches in WorldCat, RLIN, or LC. We can also create original catalog records based on the item in hand, or describe photos and slides from context based on whatever criteria you choose. (We repeat: you're the star.)
Decide what cataloging service best suits your process and budget. (We can help.) If your items are shippable, for example, use Item-in-Hand and we'll search matching copy in any databases you specify. Automated copy search is an inexpensive solution if you have acquisition or order records for your books. Copy and fax Title, Verso, & Colophon Pages ... it could be a prudent choice for your rare or fragile items if you don't have the budget for an on-site cataloger.
