Yale Law Library Database to be Used by MARC Link PROVO, Utah, November 9, 2001 - MARC Link Corp. has arranged to obtain a copy of the bibliographic database of the Lillian Goldman Law Library, Yale Law School, for use in providing reclassification services to other law libraries. Updates will be provided under the agreement.

This database is unique because all of the titles have been reclassified according to the Library of Congress, including the new JZ (international law)/KZ (international relations) schedules that replaced subclass JX.

"Yale Law Library expressed interest in making this contribution to our law library colleagues after seeing the positive response from our faculty and students to having materials in subject arrangement," said Mary Jane Kelsey, Associate Director for Technical Services. "We used Marcadia for the first step in reclassifying the materials, running a machine match and reviewing the choices of records containing an LC call number in the 050 field. As the first law library to adopt the new JZ/KZ LC schedules, and undertake a comprehensive reclassification weÕre happy to make the results of our project available through MARC Link."

"We are pleased at the opportunity to serve as the conduit for making this valuable resource available to other law libraries," said Lara Henry, president of MARC Link. "The extensive work done by Yale will give a great boost to reclass projects."

The Yale Law Library database of LC call numbers currently contains 260,000 records.

For more information on the JZ-KZ Implementation, see LC Cataloging Newsline, September 1977 at www.loc.gov/catdir/lccn/lccn.html.

October 2001
The University of Edinburgh Selects MARC Link PROVO, Utah, October 1, 2001 - MARC Link Corp. has been awarded the contract for the retrospective conversion of the Guardbook catalogue for Edinburgh University Library in Scotland. The Guardbook catalogue is a union catalogue of pre-1985 acquisitions. This covers the majority of the printed material added to Edinburgh University Library since its foundation.

Edinburgh University Library (EUL) was founded in 1580 and is one of the most decentralized academic library systems in the UK. The Library's unbroken existence since 1580 and its status as a legal deposit library has led to the amassing of a large number of early printed books on many subjects. The published three-volume Catalogue of the Printed Books in Edinburgh University Library (Edinburgh, 1918-23) shows what riches the Library possessed by the first decades of the twentieth century: medicine, reformation theology, Shakespeare, natural history, astronomy, mathematics, geology, and political economy are particular strengths.

"Our process of surveying vendors for this project was careful and deliberate," said Ian Mowat, Librarian to the University of Edinburgh. "Throughout this process we recognized the importance of quality and attention to detail demonstrated by MARC Link representatives. We selected this company in the expectation of their ability to do an excellent job. This project will make much more widely available to the global community a vast resource of very important material."

"We are excited to be selected by Edinburgh University Library for this significant project and appreciate their trust in our ability to provide a solution that meets their needs," said Lara Henry, president of MARC Link. "We will also be breaking ground by using the database of the Consortium of University Research Libraries (CURL) as our primary resource for this project."

The CURL database currently contains over 24 million records and is growing constantly. The records include those from member libraries and also from LC (Roman script monograph records 1968- and CJK records) and from the BNB (1985-).
