Non-MARC or Brief MARC Record Upgrades
Backstage Library Works offers several options to upgrade non-MARC or brief MARC records. Machine matching is a process that searches electronic records against the Backstage Library Works database. All holdings information and any bibliographic information that the library wishes to preserve are mapped to the new MARC21 record. We have received records in spreadsheets, word-processing formats, and as back-ups or extracted files from a variety of automation systems. A machine upgrade will map non-MARC records into MARC21 format. Custom programming allows a variety of non-MARC formats to be converted.

Other options include manual review and manual upgrade. MARC technicians review non-matched records and manually search the Backstage Library Works database for matching records that may not have been found in the batch process. If requested, MARC technicians can manually upgrade remaining non-matched records.

Backstage Library Works creates custom programs to map the library's holdings information to meet the requirements of any automation system. Backstage Library Works also offers other types of machine upgrades, including conversion to other MARC formats (UKMARC, UNIMARC, etc.), MARC21 verification, non-filing indicator verification, and ISBD punctuation upgrades.

Whatever the format of your records, we can upgrade them to the full standard MARC21 format.
